Gay Marriage proposed by Chinese sociologist

www.chinanews.cn 2006-03-10 14:30:51

Chinanews, Mar.10 - For the third time, famous Chinese sociologist Li
Yinhe proposed legalizing "gay marriage during the National People's
Congress (NPC) and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference
(CPPCC), suggesting that China's legislature set up a law allowing people
of the same sex to marry and change the "husband and wife" term in the
current marriage law to "partners" with the additional words of "no
restrictions on sex or gender".
As China's well-known "gay" research specialist, Li Yinhe proposed this
legislation for the third time. In 2003, an NPC representative from
Shanghai put Li's proposal in front of the NPC Committee for Handling
Proposals, but, lacking the required minimum 30 sponsors, failed to make
it to the legislative agenda. In 2005, China's CPPCC has this response to
the proposal: must be further refined, survey results need to be
increased and details of implementation enhanced.
Li Yinhe said "the odds of approval of what I proposed are definitely
low". She still wanted to use this method to spread a new concept amongst
the populace: the gay crowd in China has their own needs and should enjoy
rights they deserve.
Li revealed that through China's biggest internet gateway -- Sina -- a
joint online research shows that more than half of all netizens support
gay marriage and more than 80% of all netizens believe gays should have
the same job opportunities as others.
