three-month renovation and maintenance project for the mansion has been
completed and the refurbished mansion will reopen on January 26 and
welcome the first batch of Chinese and foreign tourists for the year 2006

Expensive weddings impoverish farmers

www.chinanews.cn 2006-01-19 13:52:40

Chinanews, Jan. 19 - Sentimental burdens in the form of increasingly
expensive weddings and funerals are burning big holes in the pockets of
farmers and "high-priced marriages" are especially destructive of rural
people's finances. These typical social customs have automatically become
road barriers to developing the rural consumption markets.
Mr. Liu, a low-level party member at Shandong's Binzhou City, reflected
this by saying that at present, young people in rural areas are always
trying to imitate the wedding rituals of city folks. Whatever the latter
have, the former will want to have, whatever the expenses.
Farmers in more economically developed Jiaodong Peninsula said that their
local "marriages" cost even more. Mr. Gao, a farmer at Shahe Town in
Laizhou City, has a son. He said to reporters his only son did not make
it through schools and worked as a laborer in a small farm factory, with
so-so family income. All these years they saved every penny and would not
think of wasteful spending, accumulating a nest egg of more than 100,000
RMB (US$12,500). However, his only son's marriage occasioning a new house
for the newlyweds cost fifty to sixty thousand Yuan. Add on top new home
appliances and furniture and the family completely went through its
100,000 RMB plus savings. According to local customs, when the new
daughter-in-law enters her new home, the groom's family must fork over
another 100,000 RMB and where will this money come from? This Mr. Gao,
the farmer, has been losing sleep over this problem.
After the cancellation of taxes and levies on farmers, the latter's
burden was greatly reduced and their pockets have more spare cash. But
why would so few farmers have the means to "splurge", even to "indulge in
minor spending"? Other than normal pressures such as education, health
care and social security, social customs like "high priced marriages" are
important reasons. It determined that what farmers saved over a lifetime
must "be spent in one deferred lump sum" on funerals, weddings and other
social exchanges. Unless these social customs are overhauled, it would be
very difficult to develop a rural consumption market.

Starting from zero o'clock on Dec. 20, the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge
will not admit small and medium-sized passenger cars from outside Nanjing
city and coaches and trucks driving by way of Nanjing. This marks that
the bridge has formally retired from the post of artery for an extended
region and begun to serve exclusively for transportation within the city.
The bridge was completed and opened to traffic at the end of 1968. In the
past 38 years, it has remained the busiest gateway to connect both sides
of the Yangtze River.

FM informs Russia of Songhua River pollution

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-27 15:05:17

(Xinhuanet)

Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing informed Russian Ambassador to China Sergey
Razov Saturday of the situation with the Songhua River's water pollution.

BEIJING, Nov. 26 - Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing informed Russian
Ambassador to China Sergey Razov here Saturday afternoon of the situation
with the Songhua River's water pollution and measures taken by the
Chinese government to tackle the issue.
The Songhua River in northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, suffered
major water pollution as a result of a blast that had occurred in the
China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) Jilin Petrochemical company
on Nov.13. The polluted water in Songhua River is expected to flow into
the Heilongjiang River (also called Amur River in Russia) on the
Sino-Russian border.
Li Zhaoxing, on behalf of the Chinese government, expressed his regret
over the possible harms to be done to the Russian people by the major
environmental pollution accident, saying China fully understands and
attaches great importance to the concerns of the Russian side, and that
Chinese leaders have time and again made important directions to tackle
the problem
After the water pollution incident occurred, China has repeatedly
informed its neighbor of the details of the pollution incident, including
various lab test results, such as the pollutant's species and density and
the location of polluted stretches.
The two sides have agreed to open up a hotline between environmental
departments for still better contacts and communication over the water
pollution problem, and China informs Russia of the latest developments
daily, the Chinese foreign minister said.
Li said China has blocked the discharging site of the pollutants into the
river, redoubled the downward flow of the upstream hydropower stations
and sped up the diluent speed in an effort to alleviate the impact of the
water pollution.
China will cope with this incident conscientiously and responsibly, and
go on informing the Russian side of the relevant information periodically
and at all times, Li said, acknowledging that China is still in the
process of dealing with the pollution accident, and is ready to provide
assistance and cooperation to Russia, if there is a need from the Russian
side.
The relevant departments of both nations would keep in close touch on
this issue, he said. China hopes and is convinced that the two sides
would enhance cooperation and work jointly to overcome the impacts
incurred by the disaster, in the spirit of the strategic partnership of
cooperation.
Razov voiced his appreciation for China's briefing, saying that he will
report to the top Russian leadership as soon as possible. On behalf of
the Russian government and people, he also expressed sympathy and
extended regards over the those injured and the families of those killed
in the blast and those affected from the water pollution incident of the
Songhua River.
Razov noted that the Russian central and local governments are very
concerned about the impacts of the disaster.
The disaster is the common challenge for both Russia and China, and both
sides should treat and deal with this issue from the strategic point of
view of cooperation, strengthen communication and cooperation, jointly
take effective measures, so as to erase the impacts of the disaster, the
ambassador said. Russia thanks China for its willingness to provide
coordination in this regard.

Chinese entrepreneurs care more about environment

www.chinanews.cn 2005-11-16 14:33:34

Chinanews, Beijing, Nov. 15 (By Zhao Shengyu) - China's Alxa Society
Entrepreneur Ecology Ecological Association (SEE) and the United States'
The Nature Conservancy (TNC) jointly held a forum recently for Chinese
and foreign entrepreneurs to exchange their ideas about environmental
protection. Experts believe that the environmental awareness of Chinese
entrepreneurs is rousing.
China's leading wireless interactive entertainment services providers
Mtone Wireless's CEO Wang Weijia said that after two decades of economic
development, most Chinese companies have survived the most crucial period
and become more stable. They feel obliged do something and environmental
protection is the best way to reciprocate the society.
China Netcom's CEO Tian Suning said, "Most entrepreneurs in SEE grew up
in the Cultural Revolution period. The dominant principle at that time
was idealism, and everyone should consecrate himself for ideals and for
the country. During China's reform and opening up to the outside world,
we became entrepreneurs, and our ideals also grew with us. Alxa gave us a
platform to share our ideals with more people and reciprocate the
society."
SEE was founded in 2004 and consists of 100 Chinese entrepreneurs. Its
tenet is on the one hand to improve and restore the ecological
environment in the desert north China and reduce or prevent sandstorms,
starting from Alxa, the largest source area for sandstorms in China, and
on the other hand to promote ecological construction of Chinese
enterprises and urge Chinese entrepreneurs to take on more ecological
responsibility and social responsibility.
Twenty years of rapid economic growth has brought great pressure on
China's ecological environment and caused problems that have occurred in
a century of industrialization of developed countries. The structural,
composite and concentrated environmental problems in China are very
difficult to tackle. Environmental awareness of Chinese entrepreneurs
will undoubtedly contribute to China's environmental improvement.
