China GDP to exceed 15 trillion yuan in 2005
www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-20 08:53:55
(Source: CRIENGLISH.com)
Oct. 19 - China's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is expected to exceed 15
trillion yuan (1.85 trillion US dollars) this year, said Premier Wen
Jiabao at the Fifth Session of the 16th CPC (Communist Party of China)
Central Committee.
Explaining the CPC Central Committee's Proposal on the Eleventh Five-year
Program on National Economy and Social Development, Wen cited a
preliminary estimation of the National Bureau of Statistics as saying
that the average GDP growth rate in the past five years would be 8.8
percent, and the total revenue is to hit 3 trillion yuan in 2005, 1.3
times more than that in 2000.
Important progress has been made in strategic economic restructuring,
with turning points achieved in agriculture, especially grain production,
and basic industries including energy, transportation, raw materials,
high-tech and infrastructure construction, he said.
The previous five-year period was an extraordinary era in China's history
because the Chinese people successfully conquered the negative impact
brought by Asian financial crisis, multiple enormous natural disasters
and the SARS epidemic, he said.
China has enhanced and improved macro-control and effectively restrained
unstable and unhealthy factors in the economic situation, propagating
China's economic and social developmental momentum, he said.

Growing problem for China: aging population
www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-11 09:19:27
(Source: China Daily)
Elderly Chinese women perform in a community in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang
Autonomous Region Monday October 10, 2005. The performance was part of
the activities in celebration of the Chongyang Festival. [Xinhua]
Oct.11 - They looked youthful and healthy. They were graceful and
energetic as they sang, danced and even strutted on the catwalk. They
have even performed abroad.
If you did not look closely, you would not have believed that they were
senior citizens - the oldest was 81 - putting on a performance to mark a
traditional Chinese festival honouring the elderly.
Sunday night's celebration was to mark the Chongyang Festival, which
falls today, on the ninth day of the ninth lunar month.
However, their zest and zeal could not hide the fact that the country
faces a growing problem with a greying population.
"The ageing problem has come to the fore not only earlier (than
anticipated) but has also come about rapidly," said Hui Liangyu,
vice-premier of the State Council, the Chinese cabinet, while paying a
visit to a home for the aged in Beijing to mark the festival, Xinhua News
Agency reported.
The number of citizens above the age of 60 will increase from the current
147 million to 174 million in 2010, representing about one-eighth (12.57
per cent) of the total population at that time. And in 2020, the number
is expected to reach 243 million, accounting for one-sixth (or 17 per
cent), according to figures from China's National Committee of Ageing.
The infrastructure and social services for the elderly do not meet the
demand, said Li Bengong, vice-director of China's National Committee of
Ageing, at a recent workshop on the 11th Five-Year Plan (2006-10).
For example, the pension system for senior urban citizens needs to be
improved while there is not even one in place for rural people, he said.
Also, about half of people aged over 65 have hypertension, or high blood
pressure, which poses a threat not only to their lives but also to
economic and social development, an expert said on Sunday.
"Cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases have become the No 1 killer,
and high blood pressure is the foremost cause of the diseases," Hong
Zhaoguang, a consultant with the Ministry of Health, was quoted by Xinhua
as saying.
Hui, discussing the issue of ageing, said: "It will have a deep impact on
the economy, society, culture and other areas."

China's attractive white collar "males"
www.chinanews.cn 2005-09-15 14:31:00
The undated photo show a man standed in front of ad. of male cosmetic in
a Shanghai's shopping mall.
Chinanews, Sept. 15 - Now metrosexual, the word applies mostly to the
newly appeared fashionable, sensitive and excessive narcissistic men,
could be used to describe a group of Chinese male. These men have strong
heart but delicate appearance and tend towards a neutral sexuality.
Metrosexual is a compound word created from combining the word
"Metropolis" and "Sexual" and its meaning is a dandyish narcissist in
love not only with himself, but also his urban lifestyle. This phrase was
coined by British author cum social critic Mark Simpson in 1994.
Metrosexual is a new definition of the new urban male, after "Yuppie".
Metrosexuals do not emphasize dress for success. For them, clothing is
only one way to enjoy life. What they are after is a simple dress for
beauty.
China's white-collar "male beau" is the core of urban "male beau". They
have received a good education and possess a certain level of
materialistic foundation.
On the one hand they shoulder large pressure from work and life; on the
other hand they never give up the pursuit of self-worth.
China's "white collar male beau" tends to have the following basic
characteristics: their work is not the fashionable industry of the
moment, their work experience is around five years or more, their monthly
income is around 6,000 RMB (US$750), their job responsibility is
mid-level and they tend to live alone and stay single. Their expenditures
on clothing amount to 60% of their normal spending. They love global
brands and are most often found in Shanghai.
Experts believe that the emergence of "white collar male beau" is the
result of changes in the society's value system. At present, society is
at a hedonistic period and the entire era's individualistic motivation
concerns one's self-worth. Men have also gradually shifted from pursuing
social values to one's personal values and this group is concentrated in
those born in 1976 and later.

World manned spaceflight embraced a triangular balance of power
www.chinanews.cn 2005-10-24 15:40:09
Chinanews, Beijing, Oct. 17 (By Sun Zifa) - In Oct. 2003, Yang Liwei,
China's first space astronaut soared into the sky in the first manned
spaceship "Shenzhou V". With Chinese people fulfilling their sky-soaring
dreams of a thousand years, China has become a formal member of the
world's manned spaceflight club, when at the time it was merely a starter
first stepped its toes in this field.
Two years later, "Shenzhou VI" manned spacecraft returned to the earth
safely after a five-day space sojourn. The two astronauts Fei Junlong and
Nie Haisheng stepped out of the cabin in good health, demonstrating that
China is more and more familiar with its manned spaceflight technology.
In the world's manned spaceflight club, China has acquired a more secure
status and its every move begins to have influence.
It also signifies that from this moment, the world is entering a new era
of triangular balance of power in the field of manned spaceflight.
This is the first time that China has sent two astronauts on the same
trip into space and to have them participate in the spaceflight
experiment; for the astronauts to open the door of the orbital capsule
and the re-entry capsule, coming into the orbital capsule to live and
workChina has produced several "firsts" in its Shenzhou VI manned
spaceflight, one of of the most attention-grabbing was the first live
transmission of the actual process of the manned spaceflight.
Chinese people, who have always been cautious in action, did something
unusual this time by highly publicizing this mission. The launch, the
orbiting, the communication between space and earth station as well as
the landing and return of Shenzhou VI were broadcast live in the media:
on TV, radios and the internet, showing that China is highly confident in
its efforts and 100% sure in its solid technology of manned spaceflight.
Facing the ever changing and rapidly developing manned spaceflight
project, Chinese people are not only extremely confident, but also highly
ambitious.
Wang Yongzhi, Chief Designer of China's manned space program and member
of Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE) said that China's manned
spaceflight programs were more than 40 years behind Russia and the U.S.
Although it started late it began on a higher point, leaping forward
through technical innovation. Now China is the third country in the world
that can launch manned spaceflights on its own. According to this senior
space expert, China will schedule its manned spaceflight programs based
on the demands of its own development, and plan it in accordance with the
situation of the country and national power. The manned spaceflight
technology will develop continually with experience gained gradually.
When the need arises China may extend the scale of manned spaceflight any
time.
Spokesman from the China manned space engineering office revealed that
the Shenzhou VI manned spaceflight mission was the crucial beginning of
the second step in the "Three-step" strategy of China's manned
spaceflight program. It will provide necessary scientific research and
technological preparation for the follow-ups in the manned spaceflight
program.
From Shenzhou I to Shenzhou V, till Shenzhou VI, China has successfully
sent its astronauts into space after four unmanned spaceflight
experiments. A short period of two years later, China made another
breakthrough in a spaceflight of more than one person lasting for several
days, which was basic technology necessary in manned spaceflights,
setting a solid foundation for China's follow-up manned spaceflight
program.
Chinese people have proved to the world with their action that they are
capable of not only sending people into space, but also having them live
and work in space for a long time. They are outstanding members of the
world's manned spaceflight club and a new-born talent in the field of
manned spaceflight.
The truth is that among the triangular balance of power, China is the
latest power, its technology less advanced compared to that of the U.S.
and Russia. Nonetheless, it is credible that China will take advantage of
socialism to accomplish major tasks with collective power, and play catch
up with superior strength. "The latecomer getting ahead" could come true
someday in the future.
A famous Chinese saying indicates that "inexperienced for the first time
and skilled for the second time." After two successful manned
spaceflights, the second more advanced than the first, people hope that
China will "practice makes perfect" in manned spaceflights. Chinese
people might become regular visitors in space, flying higher and farther
in the universe.
